ICHM 1 FALL Exkursion to Heiligenkreuz on 21st October 09On Wednesday, October 21st ICHM 1 had an excursion to Heiligenkreuz, Mayerling and to an organic farm owned by the Schaub family in Kaumberg, Lower Austria. After a one hour bus ride, we arrived at the 12th century FirsHeiligenkreuz Abbey, which combines both Romanesque and Gothic styles. At this interesting sight, our guide showed us the final resting place of most of the Babenberger dynasty which ruled until the middle of the 13th century. Later we continued our trip to the Hunting Lodge Memorial in Mayerling where Dr. Sigle informed us about this tragic location. Then we took a closer look at the Schaub family farm where we saw an over 100 year old wooden apple press, and tasted delicious local apples and dried plums. At the end of our excursion, the Schaub family prepared some delicious homemade bread, as well as 3 different homemade desserts including plum cake, poppy seed cake and fritters (“Gebäckene Maüse”). These goodies were accompanied by organic apple and pear juices from their own production. Of course, a “Stampl” of homemade Pear Schnaps crowned our visit. Before we left we had the chance to purchase those tasty juices, too. Finally we returned after an informative excursion, which was especially interesting for those of us, who were not from Vienna.
