A restaurant server is the business card for any food production and service operation and is considerably responsible for the success or failure of the business. Work comprises taking care of guests in the restaurant, advising on and organising banquets and receptions, setting tables, delivering professional service and cashing bills. Successful restaurant servers can reach positions like “Maître d’hôtel”, Restaurant Manager, Hotel Manager, Sommelier and can open their own restaurant. Kitchen: Apart from cooking, chefs are also concerned with the purchase of goods, the design of menus, the calculation of dishes and personnel organisation. Junior cooks can specialise in the fields of pastry diets and rotisserie. The career ladder leads to Sous Chef and Head Chef or even to opening up one’s own restaurant. Hotel:
Travel Agencies: Working at a travel agency comprises consulting customers, giving information on destinations, selling packages, composing individual travels, making bookings for flights, hotels and others, booking tickets for events and cultural performances as well as for means of transport, advising on visa, customs regulations and health regulations. Furthermore travel agency clerks are in charge of the pertinent correspondence and have to deal with electronic reservation systems. Tourist Boards and Tourist Offices: People working in these fields are concerned with administrative duties, advertising, working out marketing concepts, giving information, carrying out opinion polls, doing the pertinent correspondence and many more.
